Session replay

Behavioral analysis technique that involves recording and replaying user browsing sessions on a website or application. A replay session enables real-time visualization of a user's interactions: mouse movements, clicks, scrolls, keystrokes (excluding sensitive fields), navigation between pages, inactivity time, etc.
🎯 Objective:
Provide a precise qualitative vision of the user experience in order to :
- identify points of friction or confusion,
- detect unexpected behavior,
- spot bugs or technical problems in real-life situations,
- enrich optimization hypotheses in a data-driven CRO approach.
📌 CRO use case :
- Understand why users abandon a form or a shopping cart,
- Observe low-conversion behaviors to identify areas for testing,
- Validate the UX impact of a new design or customization,
- Technical support: reproduce a bug or anomaly reported by a user.
🛠️ Popular tools :
- Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity, Smartlook, Contentsquare, FullStory...
⚠️ Best practices :
- Respect confidentiality and anonymization rules (e.g. automatic masking of sensitive data),
- Don't rely solely on isolated sessions: cross-reference with heatmaps, analytics and VoC to validate insights,
- Use sessions as visual aids to enrich communication with product, UX, tech or marketing teams.
